Hirosaki
( Highly Recommended ) Hirosaki was the political centre of the northwestern part of Honshu until the Meiji Restoration. Outside its modern centre it has managed to retain much of its charm - there are some old samurai houses in the north of the town, close to the Neputa-mura Museum, which is laid out as a historic village. The Saisho-in Temple has a lovely 17th-century pagoda; of the other temples the most impressive is undoubtedly the Choshoji, with its 17th-century hall and Tsugaru clan mausoleum. The town has a thriving tradition of craftwork - look out for the local speciality, Tsugaru-nuri, a tough lacquerware renowned for it durability.
