Hiraizumi
( Highly Recommended ) The small town of Hiraizumi lies on the eastern part of northern Honshu, and is accessible by short train or bus rides from Ichinoseki; throughout the 12th century, it was a clan town to rival Kyoto, its prosperity founded on gold mines owned by the Fujiwara clan. Their finest legacy is the Chusonji Temple, where the Golden Hall, in lacquer, gold leaf and mother of pearl, is a marvel. The Motsuji Temple is ruined, but has a fine garden that is still used for dance and flower festivals. Address: 100km north of Sendai Bus: Regular buses from Ichinoseki to Hiraizumi to Chusonji Temple Train: Tohoku Shinkansen to Ichinoseki and then bus; or JR to Hiraizumi Info: Hiraizumi Station Phone: (0191) 462 111 |
