Hakodate
( Highly Recommended ) Located on the coast towards the south of Hokkaido, Hakodate, the island's original capital, was one of the first ports open to foreigners in 1854. Russians, in particular, settled here and some of their houses remain, in the Motomachi quarter. The old walls of the Goryokaku Fortress, now set in a park, was built in Western style as a defence against the Russians. From Mount Hakodate, reached by cable-car, there are terrific views across the town.
