Shikotsu-toya National Park

( Do not miss )

Within easy reach of Sapporo, this park of almost 1,000sq km, centred around the two lakes of Shikotsu and Toya, offers a superb combination of splendid scenery (take a cruise on Lake Shikotsu to enoy the views), numerous hiking trails, volcanoes and hot springs. The popular hot spring spa of Noboribetsu Onsen in the south of the park is well worth exploring, especially the dramatic volcanic crater of Jigokudani (Hell Valley) to the north of the resort, where the constant wisps of steam rise eerily from the pools of boiling water created by volcanic activity.
