Sendai

( Worth Seeing )

The largest city of Tohoku is Sendai. Although you may find a short stay here useful for transport connections, or for exploring the traditional rural life of neighbouring Yamagata prefecture, it is not a major tourist centre. Aoba-jo Castle was built in 1602 by Date Masamune, one of the most powerful feudal lords in late 16th- and early 17th-century Japan, who made Sendai his base; the castle was destroyed by bombing in World War II. A computerised film shows how the castle would have once looked.
