Otaru
( Worth Seeing ) A port on the western coast of Hokkaido, Otaru is chiefly noted for its architecture, dating back to the late 19th/early 20th centuries when the port played a significant role in the development of the island. The most interesting buildings are to be found in the harbour area and along the Otaru Canal, which is prettily lined with lamps. The architecture reflects both Western and Japanese styles, and two buildings really stand out - the old Mitsui Bank and the former Nippon Yusen Company. The town museum is located in an old traditional warehouse dating from 1893.
