Matsushima lies on the east coast of Honshu just north of Sendai. Worth seeing in the town are the Kanran-tei Pavilion and especially the Zuiganji Temple, one of the finest in the region. The real highlight, however, is the bay, with its many pine-clad islands: this is one of the 'three great views' of Japan and is especially beautiful at sunset. Cruises depart regularly from the harbour.
