Kyoto
Japan's former capital is touted as everything that Japan was and everything that foreign visitors want Japan to be. Kyoto can, in parts, measure up to expectations; but it is also a thoroughly modern city. Anyone coming from Osaka to Kyoto by train - only 15 minutes by Shinkansen - will be surprised to find that the two cities are all but one urban sprawl. The only difference will be the pleasing sight of pagodas and temples breaking the Kyoto skyline. And there are plenty of temples and shrines to explore, at least 2,000 of them, probably too many even for the most avid seeker of spiritual nirvana. Judicious planning is therefore advisable in order to enjoy the highlights and ensure variety.Kyoto is not only temples and the imperial palace. There are some very intriguing streets to wander and some excellent nightlife to be enjoyed. There are worthwhile museums, a sake brewery to visit and interesting excursions possible in the neighbouring countryside. Much of the city can be explored on foot. Otherwise there is a comprehensive bus service and a single metro line, which is occasionally useful. |
