HEALTH Doctors Medical insurance is essential as treatment is very expensive, though excellent. The following clinics have English-speaking doctors: Hibiya Clinic, Hibiya Mitsui Bldg, 1-1-2 Yurakucho Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo (Phone: (03) 3502 2681); Japan Baptist Hospital, 14 Yamanomotocho Kitashirakawa, Kyoto, Sakyo-ku (Phone: (075) 781 5191). Dental Services Dental services are good and widespread, but expensive. In major cities English-speaking dentists are not hard to find. Sun advice The Japanese summers are hot and sticky - it is easy to become dehydrated so it is essential to drink plenty of water or tea. Drugs Bring a good supply of prescription drugs in case they are difficult to find. Japanese pharmacies sell much the same range of everyday medicines you would find in Western Europe or America. There is an English-speaking chemist at the American Pharmacy in the Hibiya Park Building in Tokyo (Phone: (03) 3271 4034). Safe Water Tap water is safe throughout Japan. Mineral water is also widely available. Beware of drinking from mountain streams as there is a risk of contracting tapeworm, and don't paddle barefoot in rice paddies or in stagnant water. |
