TELEPHONES Public telephones are ubiquitous and reliable, and colour-coded according to the calls you can make from them. Local calls (costing ¥10) can be made from pink, red or blue phones, and long-distance calls from yellow or green ones, but not IDD. Payphones accept both cash and phonecards (which can often be bought from a machine attached to the phone or from many shops). The major telephone company is KDD, but there are now also two competitors - IJT and IDC. International calls from public phones can be made using a KDD Super World Card, available from major shop chains like Lawson, Familymart and 7-Eleven. For the international operator dial 0051. International Dialling Codes From Japan dial 001 (KDD), 0041 (ITJ) or 0061 (IDC) then: UK: 44 Germany: 49 USA & Canada: 1 Netherlands: 31 Spain: 34 |
