Water-Sports Arena
( Highly Recommended ) Ghent has a thing about rowing. In 1909 to everyone's amazement the crew from Ghent was victorious at the prestigious Henley Regatta in England. In 1955 Ghent organised the European championships and saw the Soviet Union in particular take the medals. The rowing lanes at the water-sports arena (watersportbaan) are now among the most hated in the world because records are no longer broken there: the water is not deep enough, which means that rowers have to use double the muscle power to counteract the drag of the water. Apart from oarsmen, the water-sports arena is full of fishing lines and half the sport lovers in Ghent come here to jog. A circuit measures exactly 5km; it is easy to work out how far you have driven yourself, and if you are a distance runner you can run on a Finnish track (made of bark chippings). The sculpture Verheerlijking van de Sport (Glorification of Sport) and the Higher Institute for Physical Education fit in here very well. Campers should take their water sports equipment with them since they look out on to the water-sports arena from their tents. Address: Watersportlaan Phone: Sport and Recreation Office 09-2218071 Bus: Bus 6 Accessible: Very good |
