Vleeshuis
( Highly Recommended ) In 15th-century Ghent certain butchers were banned and all meat had to be sold in the covered meat market in order to make the control of price and quality easier. You can still see by the facade along the Leie that meat used to be brought in by boat. The small lean-to buildings on Groentenmarkt were used for processing offal which was made into puddings that the poor could afford. Some of these buildings now house small shops or cafés. The wooden trusses are worth looking at, but alas the Vleeshuis has been waiting for a new use for a long time. For years there has been talk of making the Vleeshuis a covered market as it used to be but that idea has been shelved for the time being. Now and then an exhibition or a medieval breakfast bring this historic building to life once more. Address: Vleeshuistragel, Pensmarkt and Groentenmarkt Open: Only during events Restaurant: Pubs on the Groentenmarkt (Inexpensive) Bus: Tram 1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 40, 41, 42 Accessible: Good Admission: Depends on events Other: Gravensteen |
