François van Ryhove was a formidable fighter against idolatry and in 1577 he founded a Calvinist republic in Ghent. The Catholic
leaders were thrown behind bars in the cellar of this building, where the archaeological service is now housed. You can see
the recent discoveries in the covered walkway. Here they are cleaned up and their historical value assessed. The courtyard
garden is a peaceful oasis but until a few years ago it was even more attractive because it contained sculptures.
