Stadhuis

( Do not miss )

Emperor Charles V suffered seriously from megalomania and wanted to build the largest city hall in the world in the city of his birth. It had to surpass all its high Gothic predecessors and be elevated and proud. It did not turn out like that, however. His wars drained the exchequer and there was no money for the city hall. Nevertheless the Stadhuis is interesting architecturally. It illustrates perfectly the building trends through the ages; half has a Gothic facade, the other half was influenced by the spirit of the Renaissance and was constructed in the classical style.
