This small square was not always just somewhere to eat an ice cream in peace, to look at the Gravensteen from a pavement café or watch the trams come and go. The middle of the square where a lion now stands enthroned on his plinth was the site of the stake during the reign of the fanatical Philip II. It was the time of the edicts of the Inquisition and crazy witch hunts. Mind you, women in Ghent did not need to be burned at the stake. A woman was regarded as a lesser creature so it was a sin to waste firewood on her: she was drowned or beheaded. It is quite likely that many men who were condemned to death regretted that they belonged to the superior sex.
