( Do not miss )

Nearly 20,000 students register at the University of Ghent each year and although it has a good reputation the conditions are not ideal. The lecture theatres could do with a couple of coats of paint and if there were more space no one would have to sit on the stairs to hear the lectures. However, the library, known as the fourth tower, is one of the best and was designed by one of Belgium's leading architects, Henry van de Velde. The tower is 64m high, has 26 floors and space for two million books and manuscripts; it even has a billiard hall. This is the place to come if you want to read a newspaper from 1880. As ever, the charm of the catalogue room with the old card-filing system has had to make way for the less romantic computer.
