Oude Postgebouw
(
Highly Recommended
)
The striking building in the Korenmarkt was the neo-gothic post office building until 1999. Local residents were keen to preserve
it and backed a proposal to convert the post office into a shopping centre. The name 'Old Post Office' is used here for the
first time. The architect Louis Cloquet who also designed the St Pietersstation and other buildings in the city, included
in the facade portraits of the city fathers, Florence Nightingale and other important figures. No one knows the identity of
the pretty girls and it is assumed that they were the architect's mistresses. The building was completed in 1910 and was one
of the showpieces of the Ghent World Fair in 1913.
