This 13th-century Dominican house is undoubtedly among the best preserved and most beautiful buildings in the city, even though it has suffered as a result of religious disputes, for example at the hands of the iconoclasts and in the time of Napoleon. In 1566 the contents of the library, including beautiful manuscripts, was thrown into the water. We know from the chronicles of Marcus van Vaernewijck that it had contained a great many books. According to him it was possible to walk right across the river on these books without getting wet feet. The friars had to rent out part of their 73m-long building as a warehouse because of financial problems. Since 1963 the house has belonged to the University of Ghent and it is used for conferences. Temporary exhibitions and a small museum of stained glass mean that the building is open to the public at weekends.
