Bijloke Museum
(
Do not miss
)
The Bijloke, on the banks of the Leie and the Coupure canal is a large complex of buildings that was a hospital and hospice,
and an abbey in the 14th century. Like many other religious buildings it became a target of the iconoclasts. The whole complex
was restored in 1926.
The cluster of buildings are well used and the activities that take place here are very varied. Forensic pathologists carry
out investigations into suspicious deaths; an ultra-modern concert hall offers the very peak of pleasure for the lover of
classical music and a museum of archaeology and antiquities informs the visitor about the history of the city. A number of
architectural elements give a decorative and somewhat fairytale impression.
