The architect Louis Minard was an art lover who used his own savings to build a neo-classical theatre. Until the Ghent Dutch Theatre (Nederlands Toneel Gent) was established this was the only place in Ghent where local people could see plays, mainly folk theatre, in the Ghent dialect.
The bronze man who sits by the entrance is Romain de Coninck, a man of the theatre who was close to the people, wrote pieces in the Ghent dialect and introduced this vivid idiom to television in a comic police series. His plays are still performed regularly. If this statue should disappear without trace during your visit then Romain is probably away being restored after being hit by a car. It wouldn't be the first time.
