Klein-Manchester
(
Worth Seeing
)
This area known as 'little Manchester' is no more than a grey neglected quarter but it is not difficult to evoke the atmosphere
of the cotton mills that once stood here by the water. Fortunately the times when women and children laboured 16 hours or
more a day are long since past. The buildings are now occupied by squatters, artists make lofts out of former weaving sheds
and the decay intensifies. The best way to see the area is to walk along the tow-path from Oudburg or to go on a boat trip.
You can admire the machines from these factories in the Museum voor Industriële Archeologie (Museum of Industrial Archaeology).
One item on display is the loom that was used in Daens, an Oscar-nominated gritty film based on the novel Peter Daens by the
local Flemish author Louis Paul Boon.
