Belfort

Like the begijnhofs, the Flemish bell towers are on the UNESCO list. The bell towers are symbols of the power and the autonomy
of the cities. They were outstanding lookout posts, giving advance warning of attacking troops or hotbeds of revolt. The bells
served as an alarm signal so that the populace could mobilise and collect water from the Leie for fire fighting. The golden
dragon on the top of the spire is a symbol of the city and weighs so much, at least 400kg, that it failed as a weather vane.
This bell tower was only completed in 1913 when it was quickly finished for the World Fair. The cellar of the adjoining Cloth
Hall now houses the VVV tourist office.
