Vrije ('free') skippers had an absolute monopoly on the part of the River Leie between the two bridges, Grasbrug and St Michielsbrug, and so could easily make a living. They built their guild house in Brabant Gothic. Here and there the architecture shows traces of the unfolding Renaissance, and the arms of Emperor Charles V are carved in the gable: Plus Oultre, which roughly translates as 'onward ever onward and upward'. The entrance is decorated with the type of ship which carried Christopher Columbus on his voyages of discovery.
