Massif des Maures
( Highly Recommended ) Just inland from the coast, the Maures mountains offer a welcome escape from the tourist hordes of nearby St-Tropez. Its name comes from the Greek amauros, meaning dark or sombre, and it is a surprisingly unfrequented region of low hills, clothed in dense forests of cork oaks, conifers and chestnut trees bearing fruits the size of tennis balls. Take time to explore and you will find its deserted, winding roads of seemingly endless woodland are interrupted by the occasional yellow splash of mimosa or a quaint hidden village. Tranquil Collobrières lies alongside the River Collobrier at the heart of the wild Massif. In addition to cork production this small village's other major industry is marrons glacés and other sweet chestnut confectionery. Cogolin is one of the main towns of the Maures. Its economy depends on the traditional crafts of cane furniture, silk yarn, brier pipes, knotted wool carpets and, above all, reeds for wind instruments, attracting musicians from afar. The old town is graced with brightly coloured houses ablaze with flowers, narrow cobbled streets and peaceful placettes (tiny squares). Unlike the almost continuous chain of resorts from Menton to Cannes, the southwest region of the Riviera around St-Tropez boasts a wilder, more rugged coastal strip, with deserted creeks and bleached beaches. Its resorts are more strung-out, with stretches of undeveloped countryside in between. St-Tropez is the focus for the area. The interior is also surprisingly undeveloped: the rugged rust-red canyons and dramatic rock formations of the Massif de l'Esterel contrast with the thickly forested hills of the Massif des Maures, while the St-Tropez peninsula hides appealing, medieval villages amidst its valued vines.
