Opened in 1884, it celebrates the musical world with statues of composers Wolfgang Mozart, Guiseppe Verdi, Richard Wagner and Ludwig van Beethoven, which stand on the stone cornice of the front terrace. Pride of place goes to Hungarians Franz Liszt and opera composer Ferenc Erkel, whose statues flank the entrance. Inside the building an enormous bronze chandelier hangs over the auditorium, which is decorated with Greek gods.
