Gellért-hegy

Bishop Gellért failed to convert the pagan Magyars to Christianity; legend has it they stuck him in a barrel and threw him into the river from this 771-foot-high limestone cliff. His statue stands at the bottom of Gellért-hegy (Gellert Hill). At the top is the Citadella, a stronghold built after the 1848-49 War of Independence to keep an eye on the restive citizens. The Freedom Monument, also at the top, was erected by the Russians in 1947. Before the fall of Communism, the monument featured a Soviet soldier as well as the now lone woman brandishing a palm leaf.
