Beyond the bustling boulevards of Pest is Városliget (City Park). It was laid out in the 18th century and has acquired several extras over the years. The oddest is Vajdahunyad vára (Vajdahunyad Castle), built for the 1896 exhibition. Based on a Transylvanian fortress, its popularity ensured permanent survival. Inside the walls is the Magyar Mezűogazdasági Múzeum (Hungarian Agricultural Museum). The Állatkert (zoo), with art nouveau animal houses, is another favorite. There's also the Fővárosi Nagycirkusz (circus) and a slightly faded Vidámpark (amusement park).

In the park's southeast corner are the Közlekedési Múzeum (Transportation Museum) and the Petőfi Csarnok youth center, where local youth come to hear pop music and watch open-air movies in the summer. The hall contains the Repüléstörténeti Múzeum (Aviation Museum), which exhibits the space capsule flown by the first Hungarian cosmonaut.
