Budapest has a vibrant nightlife with all types of activities and venues on offer. While visiting, pick up a copy of the English-language
magazine Budapest Week for ideas. It carries extensive film, music, art and book reviews, plus listings of a wide range of
venues and forthcoming events.
If Your Face Doesn't Fit Nowadays it seems that every western bar, pub and disco employs increasingly fussy doormen (bouncers to you and me) who like nothing more than to ruin your evening at a whim. But usually, unless you are obviously drunk or causing trouble, they will leave you alone. Not in Budapest though, where the bouncers are not to be tangled with, spoken to or upset in any way if you know what's good for you. At the Cinema Budapest has over 40 cinemas and art theatres showing all the top commercial films in English and some of the best Hungarian films on release with English subtitles. During the summer months something of a film fest takes place in Budapest showing many recent Hungarian film classics like Confrontation, The Witness, The Whistling Cobblestone and Little Valentino (very revealing about Budapest itself) being shown. A comprehensive film listing and guide is included in the English-language newspaper Budapest Sun. Through the Night In common with their counterparts in western capitals such as Amsterdam, Paris and Rome (not so much in London), some clubs and bars in Budapest open for a very long time. So gear up for a long day and evening, and bring plenty of money for partying. Taking the Waters Throughout this guide there are a number of references to spas. However, they are just a fraction of the abundant medicinal and spring waters to be found in Budapest and the surrounding area. Hot springs on the Buda side of the river were used by the Celts and the Romans. There are 14 sources giving rise to over 120 thermal springs - of varying temperatures - and some 400 mineral springs. |
