Many of the best wildlife areas, including national parks and reserves, can be reached easily in a day from Budapest, and coach tours are the best way to enjoy a jaunt outside the city. Two of the most spectacular and interesting are Lake Velence, southwest of Budapest, and Lake Balaton. Both are a mecca for wildlife, especially birds. Common are the heron and egret, also the white stork - one of Europe's most familiar birds. The lakes are popular with visitors, but their size affords plenty of quiet spots for those just wanting solitude and peace.
