Parks and Gardens
Though Budapest has an abundance of parks and gardens, during the summer, on public holidays and weekends, they won't be quite the havens of tranquillity you would wish. Margit-sziget (Margaret Island), though cut off from the city by the Danube and offering woodlands and gardens as well as swimming pools and sports grounds, is a very popular venue for Pestians and tourists alike. However, if all you want is to escape the traffic, this is the place to come. Private vehicles are banned. Városliget (City Park) has extensive gardens and woodland, also a zoo, transport and agricultural museums, a circus and baths. Such amenities naturally attract people so don't expect to stroll alone listening to no more than birdsong and the rustle of leaves. Strictly speaking, Budai-hegység (Buda Hills) are neither park nor garden but they are as peaceful a place as you will find so near to the city. Compris ing three hills - St John's Hill, the Hill of the Three Boundaries and Freedom Hill - they offer woodland trails, the habitat of wood peckers and warblers, and short ski-lifts to allow exploration. Near by, but not necessarily a quiet spot, is Budakeszi Game Park with wild boar and deer. |
