9 Szépművészeti Mùzeum (Fine Arts Museum)
If any institution demonstrates Hungarians' value of high art, it is this museum, which must rank as one of the major galleries in Central Europe. With a collection of some 120,000 exhibits, this museum holds one of the finest Spanish collections outside Spain. The designers, Albert Schickedanz and Fölöp Herzog, completed the construction of the museum in 1906, and it represents the last piece of eclectic architecture in Hungary. The museum is ideally located in Heroes' Square, which is the grandest of Budapest's many open areas. The Old Masters Gallery of the museum is world famous, exhibiting works by Raphael, Breughel, Rembrandt, El Greco, Velázquez and Goya, along with many more of the greats. British painting is well represented by Hogarth, Reynolds and Gainsborough. Also strongly represented are the French Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, including works by Delacroix, Courbet, Millet, Gauguin, Renoir, Monet, Cézanne and Toulouse-Lautrec. Picasso, Chagall, Le Corbusier and Vasarely bring the French collection into the 20th century. If you haven't had enough by this time, there's also the Ancient Egyptian art collection which includes painted wooden mummy cases, reliefs from the wall of a temple built during the 4th century BC and some fine statuary. If you're a real glutton for art be sure to take in the Greco-Roman collec tion, and also the superb ceramics dating from the 6th to the 1st century BC. There is an enormous amount to get through in this collection, so you may wish to browse through some parts and concentrate on others.Address: Hösök tere, Budapest XIV Phone: 343 7401 Open: 1 Jan-14 Mar, Tue-Sun 10-4, 15 Mar-31 Dec, Tue-Sun 10-6.
