Around Várhegy (Castle Hill)

This walk round Castle Hill gives a flavour of the old town of Buda.

From the cobbled Dísz tér (square) enter Tárnok utca.

At No 18 is the Patikamùzeum (Museum of Pharmacy), a former chemist's shop dating from 1745.

Walk towards Szentháromság tér. Pass to the right of St Matthias Church into cobbled courtyards with the Halaszabastya (Fishermen's Bastion) in front of you.

Climb the towers of Fishermen's Bastion for spectacular views of the Danube and Pest.

Return via the north side of St Matthias Church with the Hilton Hotel on your right. Back on the Szentháromság tér, turn right into Hess András tér, then bear left and walk down Fortuna utca.

Fortuna utca is perhaps the most picturesque street on Castle Hill. On the left, the Museum of Commerce and Catering is worth a visit.

Passing the high-class Café Pierrot, enter Bécsikapu tér, dominated by the Gothic edifice of the National Archives of Hungary. Walk up Petermann Bíró utca to the tower and ruins of medieval Mary Magdalene Church, then turn left towards Úri utca.

The pastel-green building on the right, with a police sign outside, houses the Telefónia Mùzeum (Telephone Museum).

Return to Szentháromság tér. Turn left by the equestrian statue of Hadik András to Tóth Árpád sétány for distant views of the Buda Hills. Turn back, then right into Úri utca.

At No 9 is the entrance to the Catacombs. Many of the caves are believed to be between 500 and 700 years old and were used for military purposes by occupying Turks.

Walk down into Dísz tér, where the walk ends.
