Zeneakadémia (Academy of Music)

( Highly Recommended )

The building was completed in 1907, and its official name is something of a mouthful: Liszt Ferenc Zenemüvészeti Főiskola. The first president was the great Franz Liszt himself (a bronze statue of him stands above the main entrance), and the first director was Ferenc Erkel. The main hall seats 1,200, and is dominated by the magnificent Walcker organ. On each side of the organ there are inscriptions in Latin: Sursum Corda (Raise Your Hearts) on the left; and Favete Linguis (Shut Up, or Be Quiet) on the right. A beautiful art-nouveau building, the Academy is the centre of Budapest's musical life.
