Citadella (Citadel)
(
Highly Recommended
)
This grim, formidable stronghold on top of Gellért-hegy (Gellért Hill) was built after the Revolution of 1848-9, its principal
miltary purpose to control Castle Hill. Parts of it were symbolically demolished in 1894. In the past it had several functions,
as a prison camp, temporary accommodation for the homeless, the site of an anti-aircraft battery, and latterly a tourist attraction.
Since it's a unique viewing point to look down on the city (telescope hire available), it is worth the walk. The 14m-tall
statue of a woman holding a palm leaf is the Statue of Liberty and commemorates liberation from Fascist occupation.
