Várszínház (Castle Theatre)

( Worth Seeing )

Completed in 1736, the building was originally the Church of the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, but in 1784 Joseph II dissolved this order. The monastery then became a casino, and the church gave place to a theatre. The theatre had a wooden floor and could seat 1,200 people, and it was here that the first ever play in Hungarian was performed - previously all other performances had been in German. In 1924 a part of the gallery collapsed, postponing the next performance until 1978 when the new theatre, of marble and concrete (but seating only 264 people), was opened.
