Budapesti Történeti Mùzeum (Budapest History Museum)

( Do not miss )

Occupying the southern end of the Buda Castle Palace, Wing E, this excellent exhibition provides a historical record of Budapest's last 2,000 years. In the basement front hall of the History Museum there's a plaster model of Castle Hill, and a detailed drawing in black and white of the Gothic Buda Castle Palace as it probably used to be. Its largest hall was 70m by 17m, where even horseback tournaments took place! The museum is divided into two sections. On the lower level (a bewildering maze of passageways, cellars and vaulted halls) can be seen the remains of the medieval palace, together with sculptures, pots and pans, and weapons. Above is the principal exhibition, comprehensively documenting Budapest's long his tory, and containing photo graphs, prints and posters and, perhaps surprisingly, surviving arte facts from the Turkish occupation.
