Szabadság Szobor (Liberation Monument)

( Worth Seeing )

Situated by the Citadella as a sombre reminder of Budapest's more recent turbulent past, the Liberation (or Freedom) Monument commemorates the Soviet-led liberation of the city from the Germans in 1945. Originally intended to honour the dictator Admiral Horthy's son (a young pilot who died in a crash believed to have been egineered by the Germans), the monument was adapted by the Communists to reflect a new era, with the addition of a soldier figure and the inscription: 'To the liberating Soviet heroes from a grateful Hungarian people.' However, few Hungarians who lived through that time shared the sentiment, and the monument has been adapted again.
