This masterpiece of aesthetic engineering was opened in 1896 as part of the millenium celebrations, when Emperor Franz Joseph himself hammered in the final rivet. 'When designing the bridge,' said its architect, Virgil Nagy, 'I had to obey the requirements of beauty, simplicity and economy.' On top of each pillar, surmounting a golden ball, is a Turul bird, Hungary's mythical bird. .
