Régi Budai Városháza (Old Town Hall)

( Highly Recommended )

This imposingly quaint building, formerly the seat of the city's council, is now an Institute for Advanced Studies. The first session of the Council was held here in 1710, but its governing function came to an end in 1873 when Buda and Pest were united. The fine proportions of the Old Town Hall's windows and inner forked staircase suggest erstwhile political harmony. The statue (actually an Italian copy) on the corner of the building represents Pallas Athena, the guardian of towns. Reminiscent of some of the smaller Oxford colleges, this is a bustling place during term-time. Don't feel reticent about visiting it during this time, as the students and staff are most welcoming.
