Budai Labirintus (Castle Labyrinth)
(
Do not miss
)
The entrance on Uri utca 9 leads to an underground labyrinth of passageways stretching for about 10km beneath Castle Hill.
These fascinating caves were joined together by the Turks for military purposes and today a section of about 1.5km can be
explored. A waxwork exhibition (not to everyone's taste) is located here - a memorial of Hungarian history which is both light-hearted
and serious. The exhibition recounts Hungary's mythological beginnings and finishes in the flourishing Renaissance Court of
King Matthias. Oddly, nothing of Hungary's more recent and inglorious times is included. Only a street sign on the wall recalls
the bitter years of World War II when thousands of people took refuge here from the siege. Not recommended for those who suffer
from claustrophobia.
