Bécsi Kapu (Vienna Gate)
(
Highly Recommended
)
The Gate is where all four streets that run the length of Castle Hill converge, and in the Middle Ages this was the place
of the 'Saturday Market' for non-Jewish merchant traders. The story goes that any loud-mouthed Hungarian child would be scolded
by being told his mouth was 'as big as the Vienna Gate'.
Climb to the top of the Gate and enjoy the panorama of Buda and the view of the Lutheran church in the square. There are also
fine views of the unmistakable Parliament building across the Danube. Next to the bastion wall, to the right of the gate,
is a small grove, the 'Europe Grove'. It gets its name from the time when the mayors of cities all over Europe brought and
planted rare trees here, for example, Turkish hazel, Japanese cherry and cherry laurel.
