Hungarian (Magyar) belongs to the Finno-Ugric group and lies outside the mainstream of European languages. While its spellings are logical, understanding and speaking it pose considerable difficulties to foreigners. Guesswork and improvisation can lead to considerable confusion. English is gradually replacing German as the principal second language, especially among the young. Locals in service industries usually speak German and/or English, and hotel staff may understand several languages.
