  • It is customary throughout Hungary to observe and celebrate the name day of relatives and friends. Such is the number of name days, every other day can be a celebration.
  • Before the collapse of Communism and the fall of the Berlin Wall, Hungary was the only country where East and West Germans were permitted to meet.
  • According to Hippocrates, the father of medical science, cures effected by water are one of the bases of medicine. Hungary's medicinal spa waters, drunk or bathed in, are said to cure up to 40 ailments, from kidney stones to receding gums.
  • Rather than destroy all the discredited Communist iconography - statues and posters of Marx and Lenin - after the collapse of Communism, the Hungarian authorities collected them together and placed them all in the grandly named Totalitarian Statue Theme Park in Balaton ùt, Budapest XXII.
