When in Spain …

Barcelonans are night owls, especially on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The evening begins around 8:30pm with a passeig (promenade), followed by tapas in a local bar, then dinner at around 10:30pm. Opera, ballet and concerts usually start at 9pm, and the theatre at 10pm. After midnight, music bars become crowded. Around 3am, clubs and discos fill up and the famous Barcelonan night movement - la movida - sweeps across the city until dawn.

Barcelona's 'Bubbly'

Over 50 Spanish companies produce champagne. Look out for Gramona, Mestres and Torello labels. Catalan champagne is called cava, and champagne bars are known as xampanyerías. Most serve a limited selection of house cavas by the glass, brut or brut nature (brut is slightly sweeter), accompanied by tapas. Xampanyet (Address: Carrer Montcada 22), Xampanyería Casablanca and Xampú Xampany (Address: Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes 702) are among the most popular.

Listings

For entertainment listings, the best source of local information is the magazine Guía del Ocio, which previews La Semana de Barcelona (This Week in Barcelona). Available from any news-stand, it gives full details (in Spanish) of film, theatre and musical events, and lists bars, restaurants and nightlife. Informatíu Musical and the monthly magazine Barcelona en Música, available free from tourist offices and record shops, are useful sources of concert information.

Tickets

Purchase tickets from the relevant box office or from several ticket offices and booths (taquillas) throughout the city. The Centre d'Informació (Address: Palau de la Virreina, Rambla Sant Josep 99 Phone: 902 10 12 12 Hours: Mon-Thu 8-2:30, Fri 8-2:30, 4:30-7:30) sells tickets for all Ajuntament-sponsored performances. Credit card bookings can be made by phone at other times. The booth on the corner of Carrer Aribau and Gran Via (Hours: Mon-Sat 10:30-1:30, 4-7:30) sells tickets for major pop concerts and most theatre productions.
