Catalonia's hinterland offers a variety of landscapes. Just inland from the coast, the hills are clad in Aleppo pines, stone pines and cork oaks, and splashed with the yellows and mauves of broom, gorse, heathers and orchids. Further inland, one of Catalonia's special delights is to ramble through the region's extensive, sun-baked scrubland habitats of olives, kermes oaks and strawberry trees. The air is fragrant with lavender and wild herbs, their sweet, heady perfume attracting a busy insect life of butterflies, bugs and beetles - an endless feast for the local hoopoes, bee-eaters and warblers. Southwest of Barcelona in the Alt Penedès wine region, where the land is striped with a patchwork of tidy vines, the dramatic gorges of the Serra d'Ancosa, beyond, shelter wild boar and genets, salamanders, badgers, goshawks, tawny owls and other birds of prey.
