Barri Gòtic

Leave Plaça Nova via the Portal del Bisbe (part of the Roman wall) into Carrer del Bisbe. Turn first left into Carrer de Santa Llúcia.

Note the tiny chapel of Santa Llúcia to your right, and the Gothic Archdeacon's House (Casa de l'Ardiaca) to your left. Just beyond is the main entrance to the Catedral.

From Plaça de la Seu, follow Carrer dels Comtes beside the cathedral, past Museu Frederic Marès. A left turn into Baixada de Santa Clara leads to Plaça del Rei. Return to the cathedral and skirt round its buttresses past the 14th-century Canon's House (Casa del Cánonges).

Stone plaques on the façade portray twin towers supported by winged goats with lions' feet, the heraldic symbols of medieval Barcelona.

Turn sharp left, then left again onto Carrer del Bisbe, under a bridge and into Plaça Sant Jaume. Take Carrer de la Ciutat, then the first left until you reach Plaça Sant Just.

Here, the Església dels Sants Just i Pastor is reputedly the oldest church in Barcelona. Opposite, note the faded frescos on an elegant townhouse.

Leave the square along Carrer del Lledó. Turn first left then left again at the House of the Blue Tiles. Following the line of the Roman wall, cross Carrer Jaume I and continue up Carrer de la Tapineria, once the main street of medieval shoemakers.

Constructed between 270 and 310 ad, Barcelona's Roman walls were outgrown by the 11th century.

Continue along Carrer de la Tapineria past more Roman remains and return to Plaça Nova.
