Drassanes and Museu Marítim

( Do not miss )

Barcelona's Museu Marítim (Maritime Museum) is located in the magnificent Drassanes Reials (Royal Shipyards), a splendid example of Gothic civil architecture. Since the 13th century, these impressive yards have been dedicated to the construction of ships for the Crowns of Catalonia and Aragon.
Today, their vast, cathedral-like, stone-vaulted halls contain maps, charts, paintings, pleasure craft and a huge range of other seafaring memorabilia chronicling the remarkable maritime history of Barcelona. The most impressive exhibit is a 60m replica of La Real, flagship of Don Juan of Austria, which forms part of an exciting 45-minute spectacle - 'The Great Sea Adventure'. Through headphones, visual and acoustic effects, visitors can experience life as a galley slave, encounter a Caribbean storm, join emigrants bound for the New World, and explore the seabed on board Ictineo, claimed to be the world's first submarine and built by Catalan inventor Narcís Monturiol.
