Barcelona has an impressive and efficient underground rail system, enabling you to visit most places of interest quickly and conveniently, either by metro or by FGC train. Useful stations include Catalunya (for La Rambla), Barceloneta and Drassanes (for the waterfront), Jaume I (for the old city, the cathedral and Museu Picasso), Ciutadella for the Olympic port and village, and Passeig de Gràcia (for L'Eixample).
If you intend to use public transport frequently, buy one of several travelcards from any metro station or at any branch of La Caixa. The metro runs Mon-Thu 5am-11pm; Fri, Sat and the evening before holidays 5am-1am; Sun 6am-midnight. The FGC operates Mon-Thu 5:50am-11pm; Fri-Sun 5:55am-12:39am.
