Anafiótika

( Highly Recommended )

Finding this lovely area of Athens is like stumbling unexpectedly upon a Greek island village. In fact, location apart, that is just what it is. When King Otto wanted a palace built for himself after assuming the Greek throne in 1832, he was told that the best builders in Greece came from the Cycladic island of Anafi, to the east of Thíra (Santorini). Once summoned, the builders knew they would be away for several years, and so they recreated their island home, complete with white cube houses and donkey-wide paths, at the foot of the Acropolis. By far the best way to approach the Acropolis is through Anafiótika, where charming home-made signs point the way and prevent you wandering into someone's garden by mistake.
