Vizantinó Mouseío (Byzantine Museum)

( Highly Recommended )

Another of Athens' specialist collections, this is delightfully housed in an 1840s villa with its own courtyard, filled with flowers and orange trees. The villa was home to the Duchesse de Plaisance, a French widow who had been married to one of Napoleon's generals and who fell in love with Greece and created this Florentine villa in what was then the outskirts of Athens. The bulk of the collection is made up of Byzantine icons, many in glorious reds and golds, and while it is an extensive collection covering 1,500 years of Byzantine Art, it is probably best appreciated by the connoisseur, particularly as the labelling is limited and mainly in Greek. There are also bibles, statues, embroidery and mosaics, and in the building at the far end of the museum grounds is the reconstruction of an early Christian basilica and a complete, re-created Byzantine church.
